Internship

The internship represents a period of training in direct contact with the professional world. It contributes to the student’s scientific and technical education and to the acquisition of technical and practical skills with professional relevance within the field of geological competencies.

In the Master’s Degree in Earth Sciences, the internship has a duration of 225 hours and awards 9 ECTS.

The internship is carried out at companies, enterprises, professional firms, or institutions external to the University. It requires:

  • an Academic Tutor (internal to the Department);
  • a Company Tutor (external);
  • activation of the external internship.

The procedures for activating an external internship are handled through the COSP (Centro per l’Orientamento allo Studio e alle Professioni – Guidance and Career Services Office) and can be summarized as follows.

The student must:

  1. Choose the host organization where the internship will take place (from the Internship Notice Board, from the list available at the Teaching Office, or by proposing contacts with other organizations) and contact it to assess feasibility, define a preliminary training programme, and identify the company tutor.
  2. Identify and contact a faculty member of the Department of Earth Sciences who will act as Academic Tutor, as well as supervisor of the training project and evaluator of the activities for credit recognition. The preliminary training programme proposed by the host organization must be submitted to the Academic Tutor.
  3. Complete the specific form for opening an external internship, available on this page under “Forms”, following the instructions provided, and send the signed PDF file (signed by the student and the tutor) to the Teaching Office at cclsg@unimi.it, with the Academic Tutor copied.
  4. Support the host organization in the procedures for activating the internship, which are carried out online through the COSP.

The host organization, after receiving confirmation from the Academic Tutor and/or the student, must activate the internship by following the online procedure at
https://www.unimi.it/en/study/traineeships-and-work/traineeships-and-internships/activating-curricular-internship, which includes:

  1. preliminary registration of the organization on the portal and signing of the agreement with UNIMI;
  2. submission of the training project to be carried out by the student.

Note: when completing the form, indicate an internship period lasting several months, slightly longer than the planned duration (for insurance reasons), which will in any case amount to 225 effective hours.

Internship Committee: Professors Tiziana Apuani, Riccardo Bersezio, Diego Gatta

During completion of the online application for External Internship Activation with COSP, refer only to Professors Tiziana Apuani, Riccardo Bersezio, Giacomo Diego Gatta.
For further information on opening an external internship, contact the COSP.

During the internship
The student must regularly liaise with the Academic Tutor, who monitors the progress of the internship.

Closure and credit recognition of the external internship
At the end of the internship:
the host organization will complete the relevant forms received from COSP for internship closure and evaluation (AlmaLaurea).

The student must:

  1. provide support and ensure that the Company Tutor has completed the COSP online closure procedure (AlmaLaurea), and obtain a copy of the internship evaluation form
  2. contact the Academic Tutor to inform them of the end of the activities and agree on the date and modalities of the evaluation discussion
  3. discuss the activities carried out by presenting to the Academic Tutor:
    • a copy of the trainee evaluation questionnaire completed by the Company Tutor
    • a copy of the student evaluation questionnaire
    • any additional documents requested by the internal tutor (activity report, examples of reports contributed to, etc.)

The Academic Tutor will complete the “internship closure” form, available on this page under “Forms”, and submit it by email to the Teaching Office at cclsg@unimi.it.

  1. The student must mandatorily register for the exam session “Tirocinio FBL0BE” (for students enrolled before academic year 2025–26, the exam code for the Master’s Degree F97 is indicated in the internship closure form). Registration allows the exam grade to be recorded by the Committee and the credits to be awarded.

All internships (external and internal) must be closed within one month of the graduation session date

An internal internship carried out at the University within the Department is permitted in limited cases, specifically intended to address particular critical issues and/or situations in which external host organizations are unavailable.

Opening of an internal internship

The student must:

  1. identify an internal tutor among the faculty members of the Department of Earth Sciences, who will be responsible for the training provided during the internship and will act as the evaluator of the activities for the purposes of credit recognition
  2. complete the specific Internal Internship Opening form, available on this page under “Forms”, following the instructions provided, and send the signed PDF file (signed by the student and the tutor) to the Teaching Office at cclsg@unimi.it, with the Academic Tutor copied

During the internship period, the student must regularly liaise with the Academic Tutor, who monitors the progress of the activities

Insurance

As students regularly enrolled in the Degree Programme in Geological Sciences, students are already covered by insurance for attendance at the Department’s facilities.

Closure and credit recognition of the internal internship

At the end of the internship, the student must:

  1. discuss the activities carried out with the tutor, presenting the agreed documentation (written report, various deliverables, etc.)

The Academic Tutor will complete the “internship closure” form, available on this page under “Forms”, and submit it by email to the Teaching Office at cclsg@unimi.it

All internships (external and internal) must be closed within one month of the graduation session date.

Subject to prior agreement with the internal tutor, both internal and external internships may be further developed within the framework of the final thesis.

It should be specified that:

  1. the internship must be completed before the start of the final thesis phase
  2. the number of hours completed during the internship does not count toward the hours allocated to the final thesis
  3. by definition, the final thesis involves a different type of activity from that of the internship and is not a simple continuation or duplication of the activities carried out during the internship.
General information (COSP)

An internship (or traineeship) is a training experience encompassing different options:

  • Students can participate in curricular internship/work placement
  • Those who have completed their study programme not more than 12 months ago can do extracurricular internships/traineeships.

The Cosp manages setup procedures for internships in public and private companies and institutions aimed at enrolled students, graduands and postgraduates.

How to find a stage opportunity

Students can either select one of the available internship positions on the University noticeboard or find an internship by themselves.
In any case they must follow procedures established by the Study and Career Guidance Centre (COSP).
